Farmers in Michigan have been affected by the dry temperatures this summer. Not only are the effects from the weather affecting them now but the affects of this harvest will affect things in the future.
This week I investigated if farmers are looking in to crop insurance to protect their fields. I also wanted to know if farmers were already using the insurance.
I thought what better way then to start with farmers in our community at the Meridian
Farmers’ Market. It just so happened that there was a farmer there that also sells insurance at Farm Bureau in Mason. He gave me great information and ended up being the main subject of the story.
He said that the deadline for insurance for this year was March 15th but farmers can sign up to insure next year’s harvest. He also said he has seen an increasing amount of farmers who are already insured find out more. They are coming in asking for information about how much they are protected.
I kept the story local to see how this weather has affected farmers selling in our community. I hope it shed light on this area of the community that is struggling this season.
