Seasonal Hires

Autumn doesn’t just mean the kickoff of football season, it may mean an improvement in job opportunities as well. With seasonal stores popping up left and right to accomodate the holiday shopping season, the stores are looking for temporary help. I spoke with Mike Wylie from SBS in East Lansing whose store sees an increase in hiring around late October in anticipation for the holiday rush. He may hire anywhere from half a dozen to a dozen new employees.

The wonderful people at Michigan Works! can to my rescue again. I spoke with Andrea who is one half rock star and one half director of communications extraordinaire. She told me that we will see an increase of 800 seasonal hires this holiday season! Woohoo way to go Michigan! While a seasonal position has a set ending date, Andrea reassured me that it can be a good first step, a resume builder and valuable experience.

While I was out shooting broll for the package, I almost caused an accident on Michigan Ave as I swerved into a closed off driveway. It was for a worthy cause though, a fantastic shot of a man, fearlessly leaning out of a cherry picker, plastering a new “Halloween City” sign! I ran over to him, hauling all the equipment I could grab from my car, and shouted up to him if it would be OK if I shot him in motion. He was a peach and complied, I got an awesome shot of him at work.

It was a positive story to cover, I met some lovely people who were willing to be as helpful as humanly possible and for once, I got to hear some good news about Michigan’s employment opportunities.
