Words of Advice for Rookies

Dear Rookies,

Welcome to HOMTV! You’re in for a great experience, and you’re going to get a lot of experience, so make the most of it! I’d like to offer a few words of advice to you as you’re getting started here.

1) The first few weeks are crazy. Hang in there!
You are doing a lot with work shops, practice stories, as well as your exams. It may seem like a lot now, but hang in there! Things slow down and get easier as you go along, especially as you get more comfortable.

2) Don’t be afraid to ask questions
That’s what we juniors are here for! We’re happy to give advice, as well as excited to learn from you, along the way! That being said, don’t be afraid to try new things either! Part of this experience (at least for me) was a lot of trial and error. Still is!

3) For reporters: Don’t be discouraged if your first (or second, or third, or fourth…) source doesn’t respond.
It’s frustrating, it’s discouraging, and, believe me, it happens to everyone. Keep trying. I have seriously had to call 15-20 people before I got someone who would talk to me before. And, often times, the person who actually says yes turns out to be the best source you could ask for, for that story.

4) White Balance, White Balance, White Balance.
If you feel like you’re doing it too much, do it more. Especially if you’re shooting outside and the clouds either cover the sun or the sun appears from behind the clouds. Or your standup could turn out like this…

Maybe I wasn’t completely sad, but I was feeling a little blue. Get it?

Finally, and most importantly…

This internship is seriously what you make it to be, and it truly can be one of the best and most fun experiences that you have. Speaking from experience, the crew can, and likely will, become a giant family, and that was truly the best part for me when I started here next summer. I look forward to continuing that with all of you this fall, and I can’t wait for all of us to be as awesome as these guys:

You stay classy HOMTV Interns.
